Many of us look forward to a well-earned holiday, but an empty home can attract unwanted attention. Taking a few simple precautions before you travel can help keep your property safe and give you peace of mind while you're away.

✅ Lock up properly Before leaving, ensure all doors, windows, garages, sheds, and outbuildings are securely locked. Double-check any side gates and access points to your property.

✅ Make your home look occupied Use timer switches on lights or radios to create the impression that someone is at home. Ask a trusted neighbour, friend, or family member to occasionally park on your drive if possible.

✅ Don't advertise your absence Avoid posting holiday updates, travel plans, or photos on social media while you're away. Sharing your location publicly can alert criminals that your home is empty.

✅ Ask someone to keep an eye on your property A trusted neighbour can help by collecting post, putting bins out, opening and closing curtains, and reporting anything suspicious.

✅ Secure valuables Keep valuable items, important documents, keys, and jewellery out of sight. Consider using a safe for high-value possessions.

✅ Use home security measures If you have an intruder alarm, CCTV, video doorbell, or security lighting, ensure it is working correctly before you leave.

✅ Protect sheds and garages Tools, bicycles, and garden equipment are often targeted by thieves. Lock them away securely and consider marking valuable items with property marking products.

✅ Cancel deliveries Avoid parcels building up on your doorstep. Rearrange deliveries or ask a neighbour to take them in.

✅ Keep emergency contacts informed Leave a contact number with a trusted neighbour or family member in case there is an issue at your property while you are away.
